'Sacred to the memory of the / Commander, Officers and Ship's Company / of the Hon.ble East India Company's Steam Frigate ‘Cleopatra, / which is supposed to have foundered / in a hurricane off the coast of Malabar, / on the 15th day of April 1847. / There were lost in the Ill-fated Vessel, / J. A. Young, Commander, / Cha. Eden, / Hy. Ralph, / Tho. Lawes, Lieutenants. / J. T. Carr, Assistant Surgeon, / F. Nott, Mate, / I Soady, Midshipman, / T. G. Croad, Clerk in Charge, / W. S. B. Hadley, Captain's Clerk. / Together with a Crew of 142 souls. / This monument is erected by the Officers and Seamen of the Indian Navy, / as a tribute of respect to their lamented colleagues.’

Notes: The Cleopatra was hit by a cyclone off the MalabarCoast en route from Bombay to Singapore. In addition to the crew, the Cleopatra was carrying 100 convicts with their Royal Marine guard.
