‘Sacred / TO THE MEMORY OF / WILLIAM CUTBUSH / PRIVATE ROYAL MARINE, / H.M.S. ASSISTANCE, / A NATIVE OF NORTHIAM, SUSSEX / WHO DIED ON BOARD / ON THE 27TH FEBRUARY, 1853, / AFTER A PROTRACTED ILLNESS FROM / DISEASE OF THE LUNGS, / AGED 34 YEARS. / He served with credit in his corps for / upwards of 16 years and 4 months, gain / ing by his good conduct two badges of / merit in addition to the Syrian medal / During twelve months of the above pe- / riod he served in H.M.S. Assistance, gain-/ ing the respect of Captain and Officers, / and beloved by all who knew him, and / died deeply lamented by his shipmates. / Happy are they that die in the Lord. / He lies interred in Northumberland Sound'
