'To the memory / Of the Honourable Sir John Jennings Knt / Descended from an ancient Family in SHROPSHIRE / Rear Admiral of Great Britain / Governor of the Royal Hospital / And Ranger of the Park at Greenwich / many Years Admiral of the White / One of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty / And a Member of the House of Commons / A man possessed of every Virtue that adorns / The Christian and the Hero / Who / By an early attachment and indefatigable application / To the important concerns of the Royal Navy / So happily improved the great endowments / He owed to Nature / That he bore the Highest Commands / With credit to Himself and Honour to his Country. / The share he had in taking and burning / The French Men-of War and Spanish galleons / at Vigo / His behaviour at the Battle of Malaga / when he fought with the ardour and intrepidity / Becoming / A British Commander / His Bravery and Conduct at the Siege of Alicant / Are undoubted proofs of his capacity in Maritime Affairs / Which / United with the most Ardent Zeal for the Publick Service / Deservedly gained him / The favour of His Sovereign and the Love of his Country / He died at the Palace of Greenwich on the 23rd December 1743 Aged 79 / Honoured and Lamented by his Family and Friends / GEORGE JENNINGS ESQ His only son by ALICE daughter of / FRANCIS BRETON ESQ of WALLINGTON in the County of HERTFORD / Hath caused this Monument to be erected as a Memorial of / His father's Virtues and His own filial Gratitude'
