MDCCXXCIX / AET XLIII / This Monument / was erected as a testimony / of sincere Affection and Gratitude / by the Widow and Son of / Lieutenant JOHN NICHOLS OLDFIELD / of the Marines / the loving and beloved brother of the above / who died April IX A.D. Notes: Thomas Oldfield served in the attack on Teneriffe in 1797, and the battle of the Nile 1798. Buried with military honours by the French having died as a prisoner of war. Died of wounds received at St Jean d'Acre. John Nichols Oldfield is buried at Alverstoke.
