'Sacred / to the memory / of / Thomas Plumer Halsey, / aged 39, / Member of Parliament for this County. / Also of Frederica Halsey, his wife ,/ aged 35. / And of Ethelbert Arthur Sackville Halsey, / their youngest son, aged 4 years. / "Of such is the kingdom of heaven." / They were all swallowed up in the great deep / in one instant, on their passage from Genoa / to Marsailles, in the Erculano steam packet / which was sunk with almost all the passengers / by a dreadful collision with another vessel / off Antibes, on the night of / April 24th 1854. / And the sea gave up the dead which were in it. Good Hope against an overpowering German squadron. Both vessels sank in flames, with them perished admiral, officers men all willing to die rather than surrender. Born 1871. Elder son of Francis Brandt ICS and of Lucy Sophia his wife'
