'TO THE MEMORY OF / SIR CHARLES THOMPSON, BARONET, / MEMBER IN PARLIAMENT FOR MONMOUTH. / BRED A SEAMAN FROM EARLY LIFE, / HE WAS MADE CAPTAIN IN MARCH 1772, / AND COMMANDED THE ALCIDE IN THE VICTORY / GAINED OFF DOMINICA UNDER LORD RODNEY 1782. / WAS MADE REAR ADMIRAL APRIL 1794, / AND VICE ADMIRAL JUNE 1795. / WAS SECOND IN COMMAND IN THE VICTORY / SO GLORIOUS TO THE BRITISH NAVY, / UNDER SIR JOHN JERVIS OFF CAPE ST. VINCENT / FOR WHICH SERVICE HE WAS CREATED A BARONET. / HE DIED THIRD IN COMMAND OF THE CHANNEL FLEET, / MARCH 17TH 1799 AGED 54 YEARS. / THIS HUMBLE TESTIMONY OF PIOUS ESTEEM AND AFFECTION / IS DEDICATED BY HIS WIDOW, JANE THOMPSON, / AND THEIR FIVE CHILDREN. / CHARLES THE SECOND SON DIED IN THE NAVAL SERVICE AT JAMAICA 1801 aged 13 YEARS.'

Description: The inscription tablet is surmounted by a pediment at the apex of which, is a globe in a metal stand. Flanking the inscription, a figure of a seaman holding a lead and line and a midshipman holding an octant, both clad in short jackets and trousers.
