DIED 30TH SEPTEMBER 1885. / THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED BY HIS FRIENDS AND / BROTHER OFFICERS IN RECOGNITION OF HIS MANY NOBLE / QUALITIES AND SERVICES TO HIS COUNTRY. / SIR JOHN HAWLEY GLOVER ENTERED THE NAVY IN 1841, / SHARED IN THE CAPTURE OF / PEGU AND WAS WOUNDED IN THE ACTION OF DONEBEW. FROM 1858 TO 1861 / HE SERVED IN THE NIGER EXPEDITION, COMMANDED H.M.S. ROSAMOND DURING / THE WAR WITH RUSSIA. ADMINISTRATED THE GOVERNMENTS OF LAGOS, NEWFOUNDLAND / AND THE LEEWARD ISLANDS. IN 1873 WAS APPOINTED SPECIAL COMMISSIONER / ON THE GOLD COAST, ORGANISED THE NATIVE FORCES AND LED THEM INTO / COOMASSIE FOR WHICH SERVICES HE RECEIVED THE THANKS OF BOTH HOUSES/OF PARLIAMENT, AND THE GRAND CROSS OF ST MICHAEL AND ST GEORGE'
