'Alfred John Paul, Esqre., Commander R.N., sixth son of Robert Clark Paul, Esqre. of this town, born 11th January 1811, died 18th August 1845. He entered the Naval Service in January 1824; was midshipman of the Dartmouth, at Navarino, and Flag Lieutenant in the Wellesley, at the taking of Chusan, and in the operations against Canton and subsequent capture of that city, in the year 1841; in which service he obtained his promotion. This tablet is erected by his brothers as a token of the sincere love and affection which they bore him.'

Admiral and Commander in Chief of the Fleet / Vice Admiral of Great Britain & who died October the 17th 1781 Aged 76. / The Bravery of his Soul was equal to the Dangers he encountered, / The Cautious intrepidity of his Deliberations Superior even to the Conquests he Obtained, / The Annals of his Life compass a Period of Naval Glory unparalleld in later time / For wherever he sailed Victory attended him. / A Prince unsolicited conferred on him Dignities which he Distained to ask. / This monument is also Sacred to the Memory of / Catherine Lady Hawke, his Wife, the beauty of whose person was Excelled only / by the accomplished Elegance of her Mind. She died October the 17th 1756 Aged 36 / In the Conjugal, Parental and Social Duties of Private Life / They were equalled by few, excelled by none'
