Sacred to the memory of David Newton, in his youth a Royal Marine who fought in the ship Revenge at the Battle of Trafalgar. In his old age a faithful soldier and servant of Jesus Christ. He departed this life 31 July 1878 in his 99th year, changing an earthly pension fr a crown of glory that fadeth not away. ' Well done good and faithful servant. Enter thou into the joy of the Lord'.

Notes: Baptised in The Lee, Bucks on 28 Feb 1786. Served as a Private leaving the Marines on 12 Jan 1816 when his company was disbanded. On 18 Oct 1872 the Vicar of Cholesbury wrote to The Times about his plight, he was blind and poverty stricken. On the 6 Jan 1873 he wrote again thanking readers for their donations and informing them that David Newton was now in receipt of a pension of 1/6d a day for the rest of his life.
