A RESIDENT OF THIS VILLAGE HE WAS THE ELDER SON OF SHULDHAM PEARD ESQ REAR ADMIRAL OF THE WHITE AND DIED IN LONDON ON THE 16TH FEBRUARY 1837 AGED 44. THE TRUMPET SHALL SOUND AND THE DEAD SHALL BE RAISED INCORRUPTABLE. HERE ALSO RESTS HIS WIDOW FRANCES COOKE PEARD WHO DIED AT TORQUAY THE 11TH MARCH 1895 AGED 90. OH MY PEOPLE I WILL OPEN YOUR GRAVES AND CAUSE YOU TO COME OUT OF YOUR GRAVES AND BRING YOU INTO THE LAND OF ISRAEL AND THEIR INFANT CHILDREN FRANCES AND GEORGE JESU MASTER HAVE MERCY ON US' [On casket] 'HERE RESTS GEORGE PEARD COMMANDER RN WHO DIED 16 FEBRUARY 1837 AGED 44 YEARS. 'S.M. of Sir John Hill, Kt., Rear Admiral of the White Squadron, Captain of Sandown Castle, ob. 20 Jan.,1855, aged 81 yrs. He was first lieut. of the 'Minotaur' in the battle of the Nile in 1798. Served with the army in Egypt under Gen. Sir R. Abercrombie in 1801. employed more than 60 yrs. in the military and civil departments of the Royal Navy until promoted to the rank of Flag Officer; during which he attracted the notice and gained the esteem of F.M. Duke of Wellington. Conspicuous for indefatigable zeal, and activity, his valuable services were on several occasions acknowledged and honoured by his sovereign's approbation'

Below is a sarcophagus shaped panel on lions paws with a band of double guilloche ornament along the top edge. A three masted sailing vessel and 'His body was committed to the deep' carved on front.
