'In memory of William Shaw Lindsay born at Ayr in 1815. By his ability and integrity he attained an eminent commercial position. Elected in 1853 a member of Parliament. He took a distinguished part in relation to Maritime Affairs until disabled by ill health in 1856, retiring to the manor house of this Parish he composed a history of merchant shipping and ancient commerce also other works. Died in 1877. The blessing of the Lord he maketh rich and he addeth no sorrow with it. Proverbs 10.22. Erected by his affectionate widow'

Captain Bruce was feeling unwell when coastguard vessel 'Galatea' left Hull to join the fleet assembled in the Solent during the transportation of the Queen's body from the Isle of Wight to Portsmouth. When 'Galatea' arrived there, Bruce was immediately hospitalised and died at Haslar of pneumonia.
