’To the memory of / NICOLAS MAGENS Esq. / Late of the City of London, Merchant / and / Lord of the Manours of Brightlingsea / and Moverons, / who departed this Life / the 18th day of August 1764 / on the 67th year of his Age / This Monument was erected by his disconsolate Widow, / in Testimony of her Affection / to a most indulgent Husband / a most sincere and generous Friend / and / a truly valuable and good Man. / His extensive knowledge in Commerce / renders his Death a Public / as well as a private Loss. / His Writings / eminently display his shining Abilities / and will perpetuate his Name / to the latest Posterity / Sacred also to the Memory of / Mrs ELIZABETH MAGENS / widow of NICOLAS MAGENS Esqr / who died 30th August 1779. Description: 'Portrays the Resurrection and the pyramid is about to crumble for 'all shall dissolve'. a female angel displays an inscription recording Magens virtues and stands beside the emblems of his trade - ships, bales of merchandise, an anchor and a globe. There is also, 'An angel child sitting on the horn of plenty pointing to the globe showing trade is no more' and at the same time the emblems of Prudence, Justice, and Honour which he (Magens) traded with' (wreath and scales) are placed at the top of the pyramid where we see another 'Angel-child sounding the trumpet intermix'd with a choir of cherubs in clouds.' (Ipswich Journal). The globe is turned to show the Pacific, Australia is missing and California is shown as an island.
