'Sacred to the memory of Lieutenant James Gastrell Harrington of the Royal Navy. This cenotaph has been erected by his afflicted Parents James Harrington of this parish Surgeon and Harriet his wife. To the science of the officer he united the skill of the seaman with an effect which in the discharge of Duty secured the approbation of his commander and won the affection of his crew. He never omitted zealously to solicit service in the hour of danger and always justified the confidence reposed in him by the display of energy and courage. He was in the prime of manhood and had made a steady progress on the path which was conducting him to future eminence when a fever frustrated the ardent expectations of his friends who loved him. They deeply deplore his loss but are consoled by indulging the Christian hope that while his mortal remains rest entombed in a distant land his spirit is returned to God who gave it. JGH was born Nov 2nd 1787 died May 1812 and was buried on the following day with military honours near Mahon in Majorca. The grave is covered with a platform of stone on which a monument has been erected by his uncle Robery Lampin Esq Captain of HMS Ocean'
