'This Monument was erected by his numerous friends to the memory of John Macgregor Skinner R.N., and for 33 years captain of one of the post office packets on this station, in testimony of his virtues, and in affectionate remembrance of him in his public capacity. He was distinguished for zeal, intrepidity and fidelity. In private life he was a model of unvarying friendship, disinterested kindness and unbounded charity. MDCCCXXXII.'

Description: The memorial is mounted on two circular plinths and surrounded by metal seating formed in a wave pattern. There is a bronze compass rose on the second plinth. It is made of stone from the Tarn Valley, France with a bronze band at the top of the capstan.

Notes: This memorial was erected by the Bristol branch of the Merchant Navy Association and was unveiled by HRH The Princess Royal on 21 May 2001. It is a memorial to all Merchant Seamen who sailed from the ports of Bristol and Avonmouth both in war and peace.

To his organisation of the whole defence and to his exertions the safety of the town was largely due. Erected by his sorrowing father. "Father in the gracious keeping, Leave we now thy servant sleeping"'
