'Sacred to the Memory / of JOSEPH PRICE, son of THOMAS PRICE of this Town. / He was born in the Year 1726 and died 3rd of June 1796. / He was endowed by nature with extraordinary talents and possessed in an eminent degree / Fortitude, Courage and Intrepidity. / He had a comprehensive mind, a clear understanding, a fervid imagination, and enterprising / spirit. / He went to India when young, and by the exertion of those talents he raised himself to / independence and a conspicuous rank in life. In the war with France, 1778 he commanded / two forty gun ships which were equipped to aid the King's squadron. On this service he acquitted / himself with great credit and to the entire satisfaction of the Government and of His Majesty's / Naval commander. He was afterwards appointed by the East India Company the Office / of Marine Pay Master and Naval Store Keeper which he discharged with faithfulness and ability. / He was brave and humane, just, faithful and generous. / He lived honoured and respected by his friends / and died sincerely regretted by all who knew him'
