Description: In form of a rock. A smoothed area bears the inscription beside which is carved a mourning woman in contemporary dress holding a wreath. At the top of the rock is a life belt, anchor and tangled ropes.

'Gun from H.M.S. Anson wrecked on Loe bar, Porthleven 29th December 1807. This gun was salvaged by naval skin divers of the ship's company H.M.S. Seahawk. The mounting and carriage replica of the original was constructed at H.M.S. Seahawk and presented by the descendants of Henry Trengrouse of Helston inventor of the life saving line throwing apparatus as a tribute to his memory 26 November 1965'

Notes: John Jackson Hughes was lifeboat coxswain at Poole for 17 years from March 1882 to September 1899. From 1882, the Poole and Bournemouth Lifeboat was named 'Boy's Own No. 2' as it was a gift from the Boy's Own Magazine. John Hughes' next lifeboat was the 'City Masonic Club' from 1897, being a donation from the freemasons of the City of London. During his tenure as coxswain, John Hughes' crew saved fifty lives.

Notes: The letter to the Royal Humane Society quoted was from Commander George Wood Sarmon, who was a Lieutenant at the time of the incident in 1810. The RHS report of 1816 also includes letters from Thomas Forrest and Rear Admiral Francis Laforey in support of an award to Augustus de Crespigny, also dated 1815. Captain de Crespigny died of yellow fever.
