'To the Glory of God and in memory of three gallant Dorset sailors sons of Samuel Hood, Purser, Royal Navy, of Kingsland, Netherbury and Ann his wife. Lieutenant Arthur Hood RN (1733-1775) drowned whilst serving in the West Indies on board H.M.S Pomona. Captain Alexander Hood R.N. (1758-1798). Killed in the hour of victory while commanding H.M.S. Mars in her famous duel with the French ship L'Hercule and Admiral Sir Samuel Hood Bart K.B. K.S.K. sometimes M.P. for Bridport who served his country with great devotion under Lord Nelson at Santa Cruz (1797) and in command of H.M.S. Zealous at the glorious Battle of the Nile as well as at Rochfort (1806) where he lost his right arm. He was born at Kingsland 27 November 1762 and died while on active service at Madras, while commander-in-chief in the East Indies 24 November 1814'
