'ERECTED / IN AFFECTIONATE MEMORY / OF / WILLIAM NEWTON / STEAM SHIP OWNER; / FORMERLY MASTER MARINER OF THIS PORT / BORN AT HULL, NOVR. 19TH, 1839, / DIED AT HAVERSTOCK HILL, LONDON / 16TH JUNE, 1886 / OF RIPE AND VARIED COMMERCIAL EXPERIENCE. / HE UNITED WITH THE FACULTY / OF RETAINING OLD FRIENDSHIPS / THE PLEASING POWER OF ATTRACTING THE CONSIDERATION / OF ALL WITH WHOM HE CAME IN CONTACT / AND WAS NOTABLY DISTINGUISHED / FOR THE MANLY WAY IN WHICH HE TREATED / THE OFFICERS, CREWS AND WORK PEOPLE / UNDER HIS CHARGE / WHEN THE SHORE IS WON AT LAST WHO SHALL COUNT THE BILLOWS PAST / KEBLE'
