'IN A BRICK GRAVE ON THS SIDE THE VAULT / ARE DEPOSITED THE REMAINS OF / CAPTAIN WILLIAM ELLISON, / OF HIS MAJESTY'S ROYAL NAVY, WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE / AFTER A LONG AND VIOLENT ATTACK OF THE GOUT / TO WHICH HE HAD BEEN SUBJECT FOR THIRTY YEARS, / ON THE 29TH DAY OF JANUARY, 1817, AGED 52. / HE FOUGHT AND CONQUERED, / IN SEVERAL ENGAGEMENTS AGAINST THE ENEMIES OF HIS COUNTRY / BUT MORE PARTICULARLY IN THE PEARL OF 32 GUNS, / AGAINST THE L'ESPERENCE FRENCH FRIGATE OF 36, / WHEN THE MAIN MAST OF THE PEARL WAS PERFORATED BY CANNON BALLS, / THAT IS PRESERVED IN HIS MAJESTY'S DOCCKYARD / AT PORTSMOUTH AS A GREAT CURIOSITY, / HE LIVED AND DIED AN HONEST MAN, WHICH IS ONE / OF THE NOBLEST WORKS OF GOD, GO THOU AND DO LIKEWISE / GUILIELMO FRATRI ADEPTO / ROBERTUS SUPERSTES UNICUS.'
