‘SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF / THOMAS WARD ESQRE. / LATE SHIPOWNER AND MERCHANT OF THE CITY OF LONDON, / HE WAS BORN OCTOBER 8TH 1775, / AND DEPARTED THIS LIFE JANUARY 24TH 1847, / IN THE 72ND YEAR OF HIS AGE. / HIS REMAINS ARE DEPOSITED IN THIS VAULT / “MAN WALKETH IN A VAIN SHOW AND DISQUIETETH HIMSELF / IN VAIN HE HEAPETH UP RICHES AND CANNOT TELL WHO / SHALL GATHER THEM.” “NOT BY WORKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS WHICH WE HAVE DONE BUT / ACCORDING TO HIS MERCY HE SAVED US BY THE WASHING OF / REGENERATION AND RENEWING OF THE HOLY GHOST.’
