DIED 11 MAY 1898 / HE VOLUNTEERED FOR SERVICE IN THE WEST AFRICAN FRONTIER / FIELD FORCE AND WAS ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED IN THE RIVER / NIGER AT JEBBA WHILST ON SERVICE IN THE LAGOS HINTERLAND.’
