‘TO THE MEMORY OF HER BELOVED HUSBAND, / OCTAVIUS HENRY CYRIL VENABLES VERNON HARCOURT, / VICE ADMIRAL IN THE ROYAL NAVY / WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE, AT SWINTON PARK, / THE 14TH AUGUST A.D. 1863, / AFTER A LONG ILLNESS WHICH HE BORE, / WITH EXEMPLARY PATIENCE AND RESIGNATION / THIS TABLET IS ERECTED / BY HIS WIDOW ANNE HOLWELL DANBY VERNON HARCOURT / IN TOKEN OF THE DEEP AND AFFECTIONATE FEELING / WITH WHICH SHE DEPLORES HIS DEATH, / AFTER TWENTY SIX YEARS OF A HAPPY UNION; / SHE OFFERS THIS TRIBUTE TO HIS / ADMIRABLE QUALITIES IN SOCIAL LIFE, / TO HIS KINDNESS AND CONSIDERATION / TO ALL AROUND HIM / AND TO THE UNOSTENTATIOUS WORTH / AND STERLING EXCELLENCE OF HIS CHARACTER; / HIS ZEAL FOR THE HONOR AND GLORY OF GOD, AS WELL, / AS THE WELFARE OF HIS FELLOW CREATURES / WAS MANIFESTED NOT ONLY IN THE WORKS UNDERTAKEN / FOR THE SERVICE OF GOD, TO WHICH HE CONTRIBUTED / AND BY THE MUNIFICENCE OF HIS CHARIABLE BEQUESTS, / BUT ALSO BY A LONG CONSISTANT COURSE OF / BENEVOLENCE DURING HIS RESIDENCE IN THIS PARISH / HE WILL EVER BE REMEMBERED WITH AFFECTION / AND REGRET BY ALL THE MEMBERS OF HIS FAMILY, / BY THE TENENTRY OF SWINTON AND BY HIS FRIENDS / AND NEIGHBOURS OF EVERY RANK AND STATUS.’
