'Under this stone / Are deposited the Remains / of JOHN STANHOPE Esq / of Wilkham / in the County of SOUTHAMPTON / REAR ADMIRAL of the RED / In his Majesty's Navy / in which service / he has been honourably engaged / for more than 45 years / He came to this city on his / way to Bath for the Recovery / of his declining Health
/ the 30th day of November 1800 / when his illness rapidly increasing he, on the Day following / here departed this Life / in the 56th year of his age'
