'In memory of Sir Alexander Dundas Young Arbuthnot, Admiral Royal Navy, one of the gentlemen of Her Majesty's Privy Chamber, Knight Commander of the Order of Charles III and of the National Order of San Ferdinando of Spain Knight of the Imperial Order of the Medjidieh of Turkey, after serving his God and his country with true devotion died on the 8th May 1871 at Shenton Hall aged 82 years. His remains are interred in the churchyard. He entered the Royal Navy April 9 1803 and was present at the Battle of Trafalgar and served in the expeditionary force before Algiers, accompanied the British Auxiliary Legion to Spain, was present at the relief of San Sebastian and led the forlorn hope at the storming of Irun.
