Here are deposited the revered remains of / John Statham / Master Pilot H.C.S. a well-known, active and / zealous officer, born 24th October 1808, / died 18th September 1841. / He was universally esteemed for his integrity / kindness of disposition and willing [sic] to oblige / and died deeply and deservedly regretted by his / relatives, friends and acquaintances, but / above all by his much afflicted widow, / who mourns the loss of such an / incomparable husband. / Thou art gone to the grave, twere wrong to deplore thee, / since God was thy ransom, thy guardian, thy guide, / He gave thee, He took thee, He soon will restore thee, / where death has no sting / since the Saviour has died. / Also his two infant children, who died in early infancy / Affections last token. / Also of Mary Anne Statham / widow of Mr Statham, died 12th Nov 1842 / aged 40 years, 5 months and 11 days.'
