Transcript

'To the memory of Captain Charles John Wintour who commanded the fourth destroyer flotilla at the battle of Jutland Bank and was killed at the bridge of his Majesty's Ship Tipperary while gallantly leading a night attack on the enemy's ships. Born 10 Dec 1871 Died 31 May 1916' [Brass plaque on floor] 'During the night the British heavy ships were not attacked but the fourth Eleventh and Twelfth flotilla under Commander Hawkesley and Captain Charles J Wintour and Anselan J B Sturley delivered a series of very gallant and successful attacks on the enemy causing him heavy losses. It was during these attacks that severe losses in the fourth flotilla occurred including that of Tipperary with the gallant leader of the fourth flotilla Captain Wintour. He had brought the flotilla to a high pitch of perfection and although suffering severely from the fire of the enemy a heavy toll of enemy vessels was taken and many gallant actions performed by the flotilla. Despatch of Admiral Sir John Jellicoe GCB GCVO 24 June 1916'
