'Here are interred the remains of John Cruikshank late surgeon in the service of the Hon St John Company at St Helena who died at Springfield near Elgin, on the 22nd October 1815 aged 34. This monument was erected to his memory by his affectionate widow Mrs Eliza Greentree daughter of Colonel Greentree of Fairyland, in the island of St Helena. Their son Thomas Greentree Cruikshank died in infancy at Banff on 7th May 1816 and is interred there'
