'Beneath this stone lies the mortal remains of Richard Searle, who with considerable credit fulfilled the office of collector of the customs of this port during the last twenty seven years of his valuable life. He died July 1st 1831 Aged 70 years. Deeply, universally and deservedly regretted, admired, respected and beloved' [an unreadable verse follows]
