’To the memory of / NICOLAS MAGENS Esq. / Late of the City of London, Merchant / and / Lord of the Manours of Brightlingsea / and Moverons, / who departed this Life / the 18th day of August 1764 / on the 67th year of his Age / This Monument was erected by his disconsolate Widow, / in Testimony of her Affection / to a most indulgent Husband / a most sincere and generous Friend / and / a truly valuable and good Man. / His extensive knowledge in Commerce / renders his Death a Public / as well as a private Loss. / His Writings / eminently display his shining Abilities / and will perpetuate his Name / to the latest Posterity / Sacred also to the Memory of / Mrs ELIZABETH MAGENS / widow of NICOLAS MAGENS Esqr / who died 30th August 1779. Aged 66 / Her benevolent disposition and extensive / Charity endeared Her to all around Her and / rendered Her Life universally lamented.'
