'Sacred to the memory of Charles Wheatley Newbolt R.N. youngest son of Sir Henry Newbolt, formerly Chief Justice at [Madras?] who in the faithful discharge of his duties on board HMS Wellesley in the China Seas departed this life August the 18th 1840 Aet 21, a young officer of great promise, he uniformly succeeded in gaining the approbation of his superiors and by his amiable, affectionate, unselfish disposition endeared himself to all. Endued with such religious principles and relying for pardon solely on the merits of his Redeemer his end was like his life blessedness and peace. As a fond tho' faint testimonial of his worth his sorrowing mother erected this tablet'
