'To the memory of Edward Chaloner Esq son of William and Christian Chaloner which William was this...grandson of Sir Thomas Chaloner Tutor to Henry Prince of Wales Son of James 1st which Thomas was son of the famous Sir Thomas Chaloner that Great Soldier and Scholar, knighted by the Protector of Edward the Sixth as he was by Queen Elizabeth for his bravery and learning sent Ambassador to the Emperor Ferdinand and to Phillip Second King of Spain. This Edward Chaloner was Lieutenant in the Navy above 50 years and shewed his courage in his exertions in the Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern Seas. Nor did he want the gentle virtues of a good husband. He retired from the military to a private life for want of health and to prepare for a state of eternal peace. He died the 10th March 1766 in the 78th year of his age'
