'SIR THOMAS BOURCHIER K.C.B. / WAS BORN 10TH MARCH 1791, AND DIED 26TH APRIL 1849, / WHILST SUPERINTENDANT OF THIS DOCKYARD. / THIS TABLET IS INTENDED MERELY AS A RECORD OF HIS DEATH, / NOT TO SET FORTH HIS MERITS. / HIS CHARACTER AND SERVICES BELONG TO HIS COUNTRY / HIS MEMORY IS ENSHRINED IN THE HEART OF HIS SORROWING WIDOW, / MAY WE BE ENABLED TO LIVE AND DIE LIKE HIM, AND / (WHEN OUR TASK IS DONE) / FOLLOW HIM WHITHER HE IS GONE / Lord who shall dwell in the tabernacle or who shall rest upon thy holy hill. Even he that leadeth an uncorrupt life and doeth the thing that is right and speaketh the truth from his heart. Psalm XV.'
