'In memory of Jonathan LAPWORTH who departed this life May 17th 1854). Also, Thomas Cooper LAPWORTH / Youngest son of the above, who was washed overboard / from the ship 'Arctic', while on her passage to New York / December 8th 1857, aged 18 years. / Let friends forbear to mourn and weep / For sweetly in the deep I sleep / This toilsome world I leave behind / A glorious crown I hope to find'

Notes: T.C. Lapworth was apprenticed in 1853, serving on the 'Phoenix' Liverpool from 1853-1856. Liverpool City Record Office 352 CEM 1/3/6/ Seaman's Ticket no. 98727 (Ref. BT 116/54 at Public Record Office). The ship from which he fell would have been 'Arctic Hero', destined voyage Sunderland to New York (Lloyds Register, 1857; 813). Liverpool Necropolis closed in 1898 and a public garden was later laid out on the site.
