'Sacred / to the memory of / Samuel Graves Esq / Admiral of the White. / who departed this life the 8th of / March 1787 in the 74th year of his age. / A man of strict Integrity / and unsullied Honour: / Distinguished for [pre-eminent] Courage / and a presence of Mind superior to events. / His own merit / raised him to the Head of his Profession / without the support of Parliamentary interest / and unassisted by splendid Connections. / He served and loved his Country with a Zeal seldom equalled / never exceeded. / His loss is severely felt and deeply mourned by his Widow / and Relations: / regretted by his acquaintance / and lamented by tears unfeigned by the Indigent / and the distressed: / who emphatically styled him / "The poor Man's Friend".
