INDUS / THE CUP WAS BITTER, THE STING SEVERE, / TO PART FROM HIM WE LOVED SO DEAR, / THE TRIAL IS HARD, WE'LL NOT COMPLAIN, / BUT TRUST IN CHRIST TO MEET AGAIN.'

Notes: Whilst returning home to visit his family at Woodleigh, William West lost his hat out of the train window. He decided to attempt to retrieve it and was run down by a goods train. He was a stoker on HMS Northumberland, administered by HMS Indus.
