'This tablet is erected to commemorate / John Undrell Esquire Commander / of the Royal Navy / A man of rare endowment of mind / of thorough nobleness of nature and / of most ardent affections his character / comprised the elements of true greatness / and he wanted nothing but opportunity / by feats of arms to render himself / illustrious in his day and generation. / He died the 17th day of January 1826 / bequeathing the whole of his property / to this noble institution / This tablet and inscription are placed here / with the consent of the Directors of Greenwich Hospital'
