'Sacred to the memory of George Green Esqr. of Blackwall who departed this life the 21st Feby 1849 in the 82nd year of his age. This tablet was erected by the workmen employed in the dockyard of Blackwall in conjunction with the foremen and other friends to commemorate the Christian charity displayed in his many acts of benevolence towards the poor of this parish during a residence of 63 years especially in his unwearied zeal for the education of their children. "Ye have the poor with you always and whensoever ye will ye may do them good" Mark ch. XIV. 5. 7'
