'To the Memory of / Thomas Payne, Esq. / First Lieut. of his Majesty's Ship 'Phoenix' / who died the 13th September 1790 / aged 25 years. / In gratitude of whose memory and as a small testimony of their unutterable affection / this Monument is erected by the desire of his / faithful shipmates, who sincerely lament the loss of their departed friend.'
