'Near this place lie the remains of Mr Rbt CARRUTHERS / a superannuated Surgeon of the Royal Navy / and for many years a Practitioner in this borough / who died of an Apoplectic fit on the 21st day of May 1799 / Obt 81 year / Also ISABELLA CARRUTHERS wife of the above / who died on 26th day of February 1796 of a Typhus Favour [sic] Obt 39 years / also to the memory / of the three daughters and a son who died in their infancy / and Capt NED CARRUTHERS of the Royal / Marines who was drowned in his Majasty's [sic] ship / INVINCIBLE of 74 guns off North Yarmouth / on the 17th day of March 1801 / Obt 36 years'
