'In memory of SIR WILLIAM BENSLEY Bart / who in the early part of his life / was an active and meritorious Officer in His Majesty's Navy / and was afterwards employed / to various situations of trust and importance in Bengal / in the service of the Hon. East India Company / The eminent ability and inflexible integrity / which he had invariably displayed on every occasion / procured him in the year 1781 a seat in the East India Direction / The duties of which situation he continued to discharge / with unabated zeal and fidelity til the age of 73 / when on the 17th day of December, 1809 / he died. In the hope of a more blessed and exalted existence...'
