[Translation of latin inscription on central panel] 'Although this statue of the venerable man is silent / Learn, O Reader and Beholder who he was, / A famous merchant, a successful voyager through / Many seas, seeking rather the glory of his country / And the relief of the poor than thirsting for / The accumulation of hoards of wealth. / And therefore, by the will of God / He became richer, an exemplary chief Magistrate of the city / Full of honour and fidelity, serving Christ and God / according to the teaching of the church of England / (which was dear to his heart), he closed his life in peace / and now enjoys eternal peace beyond the stars'
