'Here lie interred the remains / of Johnston Huddart Esq. / who departed this life in / Leghorn January the 30th, 1795 / aged 24 years / a severe illness contracted / in the discharge of duty in / the Naval Service of the Hon. / the English East India Company, / which for two years baffled every / effort of medicine and change of climate / finally terminated the existence of one of / the worthiest and most promising / members of society / This monument was erected to his / memory as the last token of regard / which his only surviving brother / had it in his power to pay him'
