'Sacred to the memory of / Captain Francis Liardet R.N. / Born 14th June 1798, died 1st March 1863 / A most accomplished Sea Officer, strict in duty / of untiring energy, of fortitude which neither / pain nor disappointment could shake. Daring yet / gentle, just, kind, disinterested and self / sacrificing. He commanded the respect and won the / love of all who knew him. An affectionate husband / a kind father, a sincere friend, in life and death he has left an example of a true Christian'
