'SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF GEORGE PEARD ESQRE COMMANDER IN THE ROYAL NAVY WHO DIED 16TH FEBRY 1837 AGED 44. HE WAS THE ELDEST SON OF SHULDHAM PEARD ESQRE (VICE ADMIRAL OF THE WHITE SQUADRON). POSSESSING A NOBLE AND GENEROUS HEART, FIRM RELIGIOUS PRINCIPLES AND A KINDNESS OF MANNER WHICH ENDEARED HIM TO ALL, HE DEPARTED THIS LIFE IN HUMBLE HOPE THROUGH THE MERITS OF OUR BLESSED REDEEMER OF RECEIVING AN INHERITANCE INCORRUPTIBLE IN HEAVEN. ONE IN WHOSE MEMORY HIS MATCHLESS VIRTUES WILL EVER LIVE, HAS PLACED THIS TABLET-AN INADEQUATE TESTIMENT OF HIS WORTH AND AFFECTION. IN LOVING MEMORY OF FRANCES COOKE PEARD WIDOW OF THE ABOVE WHO WAS TAKEN TO HER REST AT TORQUAY MARCH 11TH 1895 AGED 90. LET ME NOT BE DISAPPOINTED OF MY HOPE. AND THEIR DAUGHTER FRANCES MARY PEARD AUTHORESS BORN MAY 16TH 1835 DIED OCTOBER 1ST 1923'

  1. The second daughter of George and Frances PEARD is Frances MARY Peard, as shown on the white marble plaque just outside the rood screen on the south wall of St Martin’s Exminster.
