‘TO THE BELOVED AND REVERED MEMORY OF / SPENCER MADAN, M.A. / CANON RESIDENTIARY OF THIS CATHEDRAL, / VICAR OF BATHEASTON AND TWERTON, SOMERSET. / HE DEPARTED THIS LIFE, AUGUST 27TH 1851 / AGED 59 YEARS / AND WAS BURIED ON THE NORTH SIDE / OF THIS CHURCH. / “BLESSED ARE THE DEAD WHICH DIE IN THE LORD / FROM HENCEFORTH, YEA, SAITH THE SPIRIT, THAT / THEY MAY REST FROM THEIR LABOURS, AND THEIR WORKS DO FOLLOW THEM.” ALSO OF HIS DEAR SON / CHARLES MADAN, R.N. / MIDSHIPSMAN OF H.M.S SANS PAREIL; / HE FELL IN THE ATTACK OF THE COMBINED FLEETS / OF ENGLAND AND FRANCE / UPON THE FORTS OF SEBASTOPOL / OCTOBER 17TH 1854 / AGED 18 YEARS. / “WE COMMIT HIS BODY TO THE DEEP, TO BE TURNED / INTO CORRUPTION, LOOKING FOR THE RESURRECTION / OF THE BODY (WHEN THE SEA SHALL GIVE UP HER / DEAD) AND THE LIFE OF THE WORLD TO COME, THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST.” / AND ALSO OF HIS WIFE / LOUISA ELIZABETH MADAN / ELDEST DAUGHTER OF THE LATE / REV’D WILLIAM GRESLEY, / OF NETHERSEALE, LEICESTERSHIRE / WHO DIED DECEMBER 22ND 1861 / AGED 60 YEARS / LOOKING FOR THE MERCY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST: UNTO ETERNAL LIFE.’
