Serpentine fluted sarcophagus in relief with pediment and acroteria. The whole rests on devices of dolphin heads and spheres. Further dolphins and a shell within the tympanum. Tomb chest ornamented with Corinthian quarter columns and has classical faces to the upper corners in addition to a frieze of sea monsters (hippocampi) and a relief of the Three Graces.

Cook is shown full-length in uniform, leaning on a capstan. 'Christchurch Times' 7 Feb 1930 'depicts Captain Cook standing on the deck of his ship gazing into the distance. It conveys the suggestion of an early morning scene, with a strong breeeze lowing back the folds of the navigator's coat. The face is very clear cut and strong.'
